How I Am My Mother

Happy Birthday Mom. This post is for you.

Now, I know you do not read my blog that often, mostly because you are mega busy and partially because no one reads my blog that often, but I figured a blog post would be a unique part of my gift to you on your birthday this year.

I know I have told you this before, but you are remarkable. I tell you every Mother's Day or every time your birthday swings around, but it is true. I write you lovely cards where I sit down and reflect on how lucky I am that you are mine. MY mother. ALL MINE. I always manage to write you a very deep and thought out letter describing your presence in my life and I know that you are always so grateful. I think I just want you to be constantly (well, twice a year) reminded of how much you mean to me and how you are simply the most amazing woman I know.

I remember writing in the photo album I made you - the "thank you for throwing me a kick ass grad party and spending so much money on me to let me attend a private university in the fall" album - that I thought you were Super Woman. A year later and I still do. I always will.

Pretend this quote from you know what is talking about you as my mother holding the universe together.

I think as I grow older I appreciate you even more. Every fight we get it (and let's be real here, there are not that many) I find them frivolous and usually my fault. Every time I leave you now to go off either to school or even a friend's house, I miss you. I really do. I may not say that enough but when I am away from you, I think about you constantly and hope that you are happy. Is that weird? Probably. But it has already been established on this blog that I am very weird - I mean, just look at the photo collage in my Embrace Messy Hair post or my 25 Things About Me post.

I love our relationship. It is a deeply intimate and honest one compared to a lot of my friends' relationships to their mothers. I tell you everything, probably too much actually as you and I have both admitted. We go to each other to vent and gossip and pour our emotions into when we are having a shitty day.

One of my favorite parts of our relationship is how much we ADORE Pride and Prejudice. It is our thing. I often make this fact known to the twitter-sphere, my friends, and other social groups/medias and I can tell that people probably wish they were watching their favorite movie with their mom all the time.

Another aspect of our relationship that I love is how similar we are. I am realizing with age that I am becoming you. Well, not exactly obviously, we do disagree on diet coke vs. diet coke with lime, but we are pretty damn close. I used to dream of being just like you when I grew up. I think that is why I loved being the "mom" in every situation I was in, whether it be when playing 'house' with my siblings or when in grade school trying to be the mature one (the peacemaker) when there was drama or when Connor would be playing outside and I would get so worried he was going to run away/get kidnapped that I would beg you to make him come in. I was teased and often labeled as the mom throughout grade school, but it hardly ever got to me. It was in my nature, to be motherly. And I liked being the one people would go to either to be comforted or to help them work out a solution. That's not to say it didn't hurt me to be teased by the dickhead boys and mean girls in my class; but, it never affected me for long and gave me  pretty tough skin. Even now in college my friends tell me I am extremely motherly. AND what about the little fact that I continually am cast as the FREAKING MOTHER in every play or scene I try out for (this past year of college I played the mother SIX times in various works). Even though I HATE being type-cast, I can't help but love being a mom. Even though sometimes I want someone else to figure out my problems for me, I can't help but love being the responsible, wise advice giver. Honestly, I LOVE my motherly tendencies and air, it is who I am.

Especially in the last two years I have been thinking of how I would be lucky to become half the woman you are: as a mother, as a volunteer (you are SO generous and giving and humble - it is astounding), as a friend, as a confidant, and as a leader. As you know (but anyone else reading this post may not) I have been cleaning and organizing our storage room, which hasn't been touched in about five or six years. I find new things of yours everyday, mom. Things that were yours - journals, letters from dad when you were dating, yearbooks from high school, law school notebooks with doodles on the side of the loose leaf, hospital papers informing you that you were pregnant, photos from your childhood, receipts from shops back in your hometown, albums from your honeymoon, sympathy cards when your father died, sympathy cards when your mother died, happy mother's day cards from when Pat and I are toddlers (written cleverly by you or dad), etc. The list of things I keep finding goes on and on. I thought when I first began cleaning the room that it would be tedious, boring, messy work. But instead, it has turned into probably one of the best things I have ever done. I learn something new about you EVERY DAY. The fact that you allow me to read your notebooks/journals/letters is so incredible for me. I am getting to know you on a level that most children don't get from their parents. Your life has been filled with interesting experiences that I uncover and excitedly ask you about when you get home from work. And you are so excited to tell me about them. I'm not sure you realize how interesting, enlightening, and beautiful it is to hear those stories.

I can only hope that as I grow older and more mature, you will share with me more details of your own experiences as I experience my own version of things.

So, what more is there to say but that I love you. And I love you even more every single day. We were in Target the other day and I told you you were my favorite person on earth and I loved you more than anyone. You smiled and said, "Yeah, until you get married" and I responded with "and then start popping out some kiddos". We both laughed. I love your laugh.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday. How old are you again? 29? 30? Eh, doesn't matter.

Remember, you da best and to stay gold, Ponyboy.

Love ya.
xx

P.S. I leave you with your favorite poem. Even though the meaning of it is not my meaning in writing this to you, it is still an insanely beautiful poem that is engraved in my mind because of how many times I have heard you recite it.

Song of the Week No. 7

Hello!

So this week's song is "Lovesick" by the Friendly Fires. Their music makes me want to dance!

Check this song out and let me know what you think.

Coming up: a July Music post in a few days, as well as a Monthly Favorites! Also, my mother's birthday is in a couple days and I have a special post dedicated to her. Make sure to check them all out and leave your links below :)

I Heart Summer Tag

Hello there!

I was recently tagged by Sinead from Dreaming Again and Maddie from Ring-a-Round a Rosey to do this tag. I cannot believe how quickly this summer is flying by - I go back to school in about a month. Here are a few of my summer favorites:

1. Favourite bronzer for the summer?
I must admit that I do not use a bronzer at all but instead use a pressed setting powder to give a light but matte finish to my look. At the moment I am using Covergirl's Clean Pressed Powder in Classic Ivory. I really would love to try a bronzer out though so if you have any suggestions on a good one, let me know!

2. You're relaxing on a hammock on a tropical island, what would you be sipping on?
Strawberry lemonade! Probably in a mason jar with a slice of lemon.

3. Favourite summer lipstick?
I am absolutely, madly, deeply in love with the Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipsticks. My favorite is 103 because it is a great shade for my skin tone and hair color. It is a medium pink with a creamy, matte finish. It is also extremely pigmented and
smells amazing.

4. Pool or beach?
The beach! I have only been to the beach once this summer and it was the Pacific Ocean coast in Oregon. I love the breeze, sand, and grandeur of the ocean over a crowded chlorine filled pool. However, I do like to wade with friends in a pool at night.

5. Summer= crazy hair, what's your must have styling product?
I have been loving both my Fructis Shine Brilliantine Glossing Spray and my Organix Moroccan Argan Oil. Both have given my hair more shine and the oil has really improved the quality of my hair.
I do really want to try Not Your Mother's 'Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray' in the next couple weeks before summer ends.

6. Sun bathing or fake tanning?
Is it bad that I have to say neither? I really do love the summer but my pale skin does not like the sun. I burn immediately, no matter what SPF I have on, and then I peel pretty badly. My skin just refuses to tan. When I was competing in Irish dance however, for the majors (Nationals, Oireachtas, etc.) everyone at my academy was basically required to get a fake tan (spray on). I personally would never step foot in a tanning bed because my skin would probably fall off and die but the spray on tans were always a good experience because I would go to my Salon and Spa and my woman was always very sweet and thorough. I must admit that I envy girls who can get a perfect summer tan but I am quite content with my pale glow.

7. Favourite summer nail polish?
Light Yellow by Love & Beauty from Forever 21. I usually never wear bright colors on my nails (usually I stick with either pastels or deep dark colors) but I fell in love with this color.

8. Any summer traditions?
We have tons! Most include feising, visiting friends and family, and cook outs.

9. Favourite summer scent?
Ooh this is tough. In my June Favorites post I said Blooming Violets from V&S and Malaia from Hollister, but I think lately I would say my Burberry Brit Sheer Eau de Toilette Spray. It is very light and it makes me feel pretty!

10. Favourite BBQ food?
Literally everything on a BBQ. I love when we cook out! Burgers, hot dogs, steak, chicken, corn, baked potatoes - everything goes on the grill and I would eat it all if I could.

11. Favourite summer proof makeup?
I have really been enjoying my Maybelline eyeliners (both kohl and liquid) because they stay in place and haven't been smearing, smudging, or wearing off in the heat.

12. Any summer vacations planned?
Well, if you read my post I'm Traveling then you will know that I have been going lots of places! I went to Portland, Oregon for a cousin's wedding, NYC and Madison, New Jersey to meet up with friends, and Washington D.C. to visit family. I am currently trying to convince my older brother to plan a trip with me to Europe or Asia next summer to go backpacking. I will keep you updated on that :)

I Tag:

Thanks again to Sinead and Maddie for the tag! I hope you enjoyed and let me know in the comments below what YOU have been loving or any recommendations!

Quote of the Day No. 6

YES. Being yourself, your quirky, nerdy, weird, spastic, self is always the best. When you are being yourself, you feel refreshed. You can sit back and say what you want to say, do what you want to do, dance the way you wanna dance, eat what you want to eat, ya know?

Putting on a façade is a) not cool and b) kinda difficult because inside you are cringing at how you wish you did not have to pretend you are not in love with One Direction or deny you have seen almost every episode of Disney channel's Good Luck Charlie with your younger sister and you actually enjoyed it.

I have found in my nineteen and a half years of life that you must surround yourself with people who allow you to be you. People with whom you can feel comfortable being as crazy or as reserved as you want to be at any given moment. People with whom you don't have to hold your tongue in fear of rejection or judgement during a discussion on politics or spirituality or morals (or whatever it is other groups of friends besides my own talk about).

I also feel like this saying goes quite well for blogging. I am still, after three months of having this blog, trying to discern what my blog truly is about and where I want it to go. But I am the only one with the power to decide. And that decision, well, is made based upon me being myself through blogging and not pretending to be some fabulous beauty guru or intense hipster or amazing writer. Only if and when I am myself, completely and utterly myself, my blog will be great because it will be unique, it will be me.

So, be yourself! Don't shy behind stereotypes or social expectations or judgmental assholes. You will have the best time... wait for it... when you are being yourself :)

xx

P.S. Sorry I cursed.

TO TRAVEL IS TO AWAKEN

So hello there!
Boy, have I missed writing blog posts everyday. Currently I am home (until Friday when I leave for D.C.) and I thought I would give you a little peak inside both of my trips! I went from coast to coast in ten days, traveling by plane (Cleveland to Las Vegas to Portland), car (Cleveland to Pittsburgh), bus (Pittsburgh to NYC), and train (NYC to Madison). It was exhausting but exhilarating.
I am going to just dive right in so here we go:

PORTLAND

These are just a few of the photos from Portland. The top left was at Cannon Beach where the Goonies (one of my childhood favorites) was filmed. The bottom right was on Mt. Hood. We were 6,000 feet high in that photo. Portland was simply beautiful. The landscape and just the amount of trees everywhere was awe-inspiring. We also drove to Washington basically just to say we had been there as it was only about a ten minute drive across the Oregon/Washington border from our hotel. All in all the trip was an amazing family bonding experience. We ate CRAZY GOOD food, my cousin's wedding was really fun (we danced until our feet were numb and their wedding cake was a pyramid of Voodoo Donuts - enough said), we caught up with family we hadn't seen in a long time, and we cherished the time we spent together.

NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY

So the night we got back from Portland I left for another five day trip to visit friends at my college. We had an incredible time and these are a few photos highlighting the trip.
We went to the used book store in town and I got a couple plays and some analytical Shakespeare books. I also got a couple books for some friends that I know they will love! We walked about 3 miles to a park in which there is a massive field and pond. We blissfully waded in the pond and had a splendid time. Little did we know that the next day we would be COVERED in bug bites, especially on our heels. I had about sixty bug bites in total. Yep.
Moving on, the Spotify playlist you see in the top right corner was on repeat for an entire evening whilst my friends Mary Gael, Ron, and I waited for Gabby to be finished with her mentorship duties. As you can see the playlist was perfection.
When she got back we watched Spring Breakers. I don't really have anything to say as I am still speechless and a bit confused.
Also during the trip we saw the New Jersey Shakespeare Company perform my favorite Shakespeare comedy, As You Like It. I had a friend in it and the next day we met up with her for lunch at our local diner :)
In the bottom left corner is a shot in NYC of me (wearing no makeup or contacts looking like a frump) and two dear friends who I met four summers ago. They both live in New Jersey but Juliana (left) goes to college in California and Jane (middle), who I hadn't seen in TWO YEARS, goes to college in D.C. They are those kind of friends though that all the time in the world could pass and when you finally meet up again, it is like nothing has changed.
The trip altogether was amazing. I loved just spending time with my friends talking, laughing and catching up with many deep convos.

SO there you have it! I had such a great time on both trips and I couldn't wait to share my experiences with you!
Have you gone anywhere fun this summer?
I hope you enjoyed this post :)

Song of the Week No. 6

Hello there!

I am currently in New Jersey and I apologize for not posting for over a week. I promise a post on Portland with many exciting stories and photos, as well as a post on my NY/NJ trip as soon as I get home - expect it early next week :)

So cracking on with the post, I have been listening to loads of music lately (well, as usual really). Whilst traveling, music helps pass the time and it inspires me as I wait to arrive at my destination. In choosing the song for this past week, I would have to go with "New York" by Paloma Faith. In my June Music post I talked about how I have been loving her and her funky vibe.

Check it out if you haven't already and let me know what you think!

Hope you have all been well and enjoying the July heat!
(I am currently suffering from about thirty bug bites all over my body from being outside a bit too much these past three days... UH OH.)

I'm Traveling!

So hello there my lovely readers! How have you all been?

I absolutely love to travel. Just from attending my university in New Jersey (which is about 8-9 hours away from my home town in Cleveland) and meeting new people who have invited me home with them, I traveled to FOUR states that I had never been to before (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts). I have a map of the world in my bedroom which I sometimes find myself gazing at, having day dreams about me traveling the world. I have probably been to more places than most adults have so far in my life but I aspire to see so much more!
My dream places to travel to right now are Australia, Greece, Italy, and Slovenia. What is/are yours?

So the point of this post though is to tell you that I have a very busy few weeks ahead of me! I am hoping that I will be able to keep up with my blogging but I don't know how often I will be able to post. Here's the low down:

On Thursday, my family (minus my older brother who has to stay in Columbus for his internship) and I are flying out to Portland, Oregon for five days. My cousin Amanda (who is my idol) is getting married :) I will take loads of photos and then do a post to show you my outfits and the places we go. I have never been anywhere in the west (apart from Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon) so I am very excited!

Literally three hours after I get home from the airport (at midnight) I will be leaving (at 3:30 am) with one of my closest friends from high school, Mary Gael, to embark on an adventure to New York and New Jersey to spice up our summer! We are going to be taking the Megabus (which is a beautifully cheap mode of transportation) to NYC and then taking the train to my university [my friend Gabby is staying on our campus doing a summer mentorship program] in New Jersey, where we will be meeting up with several of my best friends from college for five days of CRAZY. I am sure we will be doing some very fun things so I will be sure to document it all with photos as well.

Four days after I return I leave again! This time it is to Washington D.C. for my little sister's Irish dance competition (the Nation's Capital Feis). We usually stay with my aunt and uncle who live in Potomac, Maryland and have a weekend filled with shopping, eating, bonding, and catching up.

Amongst ALL THIS, I have many celebrations throughout the rest of this month. Of course my cousins wedding (July 13th), my younger brother's birthday (July 19th), Mary Gael's birthday (July 21st), my parent's anniversary (July 28th) and then my mum's birthday (July 31st).

I will hopefully blog throughout the rest of my chaotic month but I will definitely have more time to breath in August for lots of posts.

So, are you going/have you gone anywhere special this summer? I would love to hear about your trips/experiences :)

Well, have a splendid Tuesday!
xx

INSTA-WEEK No. 5

So here's another recap of my week in photos! I tried taking photos of fireworks on July 4th but whilst attempting, I realized that it was not going to work from where I was with my iPhone camera :( But I hope you all had a good fourth of July week!
Cute Mugs // Fourth of July visiting our Grandparents grave // Purchased my The xx and Poliça tickets
Probably the worst show I have ever seen // Pink lemonade and gummy vitamins // Surprisingly strong gum
My grandmother and grandfather's grave // Two of my necklaces that I forgot at a friend's house

I hope you enjoy these little week in photos posts!

July Wishlist

July Wishlist

1.) Raglan Sleeve Skater Dress - Topshop. I ADORE this dress but unfortunately it is sold out of Topshop at the moment - it was only $25 too... :( I do however have high hopes of getting my hands on a similar dress for this summer - possibly from ASOS or Forever 21.

2.) Worth Every Scent Wallet - $20 Modcloth. I am in desperate need of a new wallet. My old one is literally falling apart. I got it about three years ago when shopping with some friends in a small town in New Jersey at a place called Jenna & Molly. I am glad I stumbled upon this one on Modcloth because it looks very similar to my current one and is about the same price. Hopefully it will last me as long as my current one!

3.) Tiny Triangle Ring - $58 BaubleBar. I have really been getting into tiny rings lately that are very thin and subtle. I have a little flower one that I am wearing on my pinky and I would love to get a triangle one to fit my index or middle finger. However, I do not want this exact one (particularly because of the price) so I will be on the look out for a similar one for hopefully much cheaper!

4.) Suede Creeper Shoes - $41 AX Paris. These have been a want of mine for a bit now. The price isn't too bad and they are solid black suede (which is a weakness of mine). I definitely want to get some creepers before I go back to school because I think pairing them with tights and a skater dress would be very cute for around my campus or in NYC in the fall.

5.) Eyeliner Stylo - $27 NARS. So, these are quite pricey to me for an eyeliner; however, I have been hearing such good things about the NARS eyeliners, especially how their super fine precision tip ensures an even and easy to apply line that I think it would be worth the money. I would also love to get a hold of the NARS Larger Than Life Long Wear Eyeliner because it stays on your waterline ALL day.

6.) All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray - $29 Urban Decay. This is probably at the top of my Wishlist (even though it is the last I am mentioning). I love the concept of a setting spray! I am especially fond of long lasting makeup because I tend to stay out very late when I go out and I hate when it seems all my makeup has disappeared when I arrive home. I cannot wait to get my hands on this and try it out! I will let you all know what I think :)

What is on your Wishlist this July? Let me know in the comments below!

Monthly Favorites: June!

Hello there my lovelies!

June has ended and now it is time for a monthly favorites post!
I thought I would start off with my favorite beauty, skin care, and hair products.

First, the beauty products:

  • The Pink Punch Baby Lips smells amazing and gives my lips a pale, baby pink sheen. I would recommend when wearing Baby Lips to apply a lip balm underneath to add moisture and you are good to go.
  • I did just get the Maybelline Master Smoky Eyeliner (in Black Smoke) a week ago, but I can already tell from using it these past six days that it is a keeper. I wear this on my under-eye water line paired with a liquid or gel eyeliner on my top lid. It goes on quite smoothly and stays in place for a long time.
  • In the bottom left corner is my Estée Lauder Deluze All-Over Face Compact which features two silky powder blushes in Rose Wood (left) and Nude Rose (center) and a soft matte bronzer (right). I really like contouring with the two blushes. I must admit though that since I am very pale I do not use any bronzer at all so I do not get much use out of that. Still, it is a lovely compact to have and it is conveniently small.
  • The Revlon 24 Hour Colorstay Foundation has been my obsession. I have mine for Normal/Dry Skin in 110 Ivory. This foundation has been great for my skin and the color is just right for my skin tone. If you haven't already, definitely check this out and let me know what you think.

Moving on to the rest of the products:

  • On the left is a Lollia Shea Butter Hand Creme from Anthropologie in Classic Petal. Now, this has been my favorite hand creme for more than just the month of June. I have been using it almost every day since back in April when I got it. In my opinion, the smell is addictive and it definitely does its job of moisturizing my hands very nicely.
  • In the middle is a mason jar filled with cotton pads that I use to take off my makeup every night. I end up using about three every night. I just get a pack of 100 count from Target and although a bit small, they work really well.
  • Back in January, my little sister and I went a bit "sale crazy" and bought up about 10 Victoria's Secret Fragrance Mists and Lotions. Lately, I have been using the Blooming Violet. It just smells so summery fresh :)

  • I really have been enjoying the Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil. I think my hair has benefited from me spraying this on after I shower with slightly damp hair and then brushing it through. It has helped my split ends and I think it has made my hair more shiny and healthy looking. I also am fascinated every time I use it being that it is a weightless dry oil. It also smells quite nice.
  • In the morning, first thing I do is wash my face with the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash in Pink Grapefruit. It is a foaming scrub that has micro-beads in it. I find that my skin feels a bit dry after using it but when I apply my face moisturizer, I feel refreshed and clean. I use the Cleansing Wipes at the end of my day as an initial step in taking off my makeup.
  • This is my newest perfume called Malaia! It was $40 from Hollister. I LOVE how it smells. It is a very floral beachy scent that stays strong for a while. I also love the bottle and the atomizer.

So, besides all those products, I have really gotten in to Skins this past month and I loved seeing several movies, one being Now You See Me which blew my mind!

I also have been loving my denim button down shirt from Hollister (I normally don't shop at Hollister but my older brother is an associate and gets a really nice discount there, at A&F and at Gilly Hicks) and my new Forever 21 Metal Cat shirt.

So I hope you enjoyed this type of post! What have you been loving this past month?

June Music!

Hello my lovelies!

So I thought I would let you know what I have been listening to this past month! On top of all the artists I featured in my Song of the Week posts (my most recent one is here), these are four of my favorite artists/bands from June.

I recognize that not all people have the same taste in music but I would definitely recommend checking these out if you haven't heard of them just to experience and try something new!

So the first is Paloma Faith, an English singer. She is so quirky and fierce! I have especially been loving her album "Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful" - particularly these songs: "Upside Down", "Romance is Dead", "New York" and "Stone Cold Sober"

Next featured artist is Alt-J, an English indie rock band. I am going to see them in concert in NYC in September and I couldn't be more excited! I just got into them this month and I would recommend checking out "Fitzpleasure" (I listen to this while running and it pumps me up), "Breezeblocks" (this music video is messed up), "Tessellate", "Something Good" (this music video is gruesome), and "Matilda"

Next is Poliça (who I am also seeing at a different concert in September - soooo excited). They are an American indie pop and alternative rock band. I love Channy Leaneagh's voice and lyrics. I am obsessed with the song "Dark Star" and my other favorites include "Violent Games" and "Leading To Death"

Finally, I would like to give a shout out to Imogen Heap who holds a special place in my heart. She is a British singer/songwriter whose music is so beautiful, so ethereal, and so chill. I particularly love "Canvas", "Headlock", "The Moment I Said It", and "Hide and Seek".

I hope you like this type of post and let me know what you think of all these artists/bands! Also, what have you been listening to this past month?

Then, I dyed it auburn for a play I was in which I ended up loving and maintaining for about another year. Then I dyed my hair dark brown for a play, then it faded to a light brown ombre. I dyed it auburn again and now in the next week I am dying it a lighter auburn red.
